CHANGE THE PERSPECTIVE

Motion graphic

 CONCEPT

The installation provides viewers with three horizontal perspectives: "looking the moon from the earth, looking the earth from the moon, viewing the earth/moon relationship from space". While images provide vertical perspective of historical time, intuitively presenting viewers the changes of moon image and imago brought by different perspectives.

The images show three stages of human's understanding of the moon according to different viewpoints over the history. The first stage shows moon of mysterious color when human stood on the earth and saw the moon with their naked eye and simple instruments. The second stage shows moon observed by human with astronomical telescopes and early detection satellites that gradually broke the conventional wisdom. The third stage shows the moon from macro to micro perspective due to various new detecting means ever since mans’ first landing on the moon. The above visual images of the moon, all of which are related to elements observed in perspectives and historical background of the time, are illustrated by brief information.

-Moon of Enlightenment
-the Hazy Age

This part is originated from a hazy cognition of the moon at early times. Smoke, crescent and other elements are applied, with the grid sphere of abstract changes as the core in order to represent the moon image seen by human’s naked eye in early times. At that age, due to limitations of human’s visual angle, revolving law and phase of the moon were beyond understanding. So people fantasized that there was a supernatural power dominating everything, visualized this power and endowed it with a mysterious color.

- Moon of Immortality
- the Myth Age

This part comes from the meaning of immortality given to the moon by ancient Chinese people. The most representative Moon Rabbit and elixir are selected as visual elements, with abstract circles presenting the concept that the ancients regarded moon as "coming back to life again".

- Moon of Calendar
- the Exploration Age

This part is derived from the human’s observation records of the phases of the moon. Stargazing instruments are used as visual elements, with endlessly rotative geometric patterns and signs of the lunar phase symbolizing the circulation of astronomical phenomena.

- Moon of Truth
- the Rational Age

This part results from the first moon map in human history drawn by Galileo and other scientists using telescopes. This point of view has changed the original misconception of the moon and stood as an important evidence of heliocentric theory.

- Moon of Break
- the Shock Age

This part comes from the first photo of the far side of the moon taken by Lunar 3, which unraveled questions and mysteries about the far side of the moon' and further improved people’s understanding of the moon.

- Moon of New knowledge
- the Data Age

This part is derived from the remote sensing imaging adopted by LROC, which will scan every inch of moon map according to the orbit line, then complete the map and reconstruct it into a new moon.
